5/8″ Latigo on Latigo Split Reins with Rawhide Ball
$225.00
Description: Every pair of these split reins starts as two strips of latigo leather. They get glued together, then stitched, edged, rubbed, oiled and rubbed by hand again. Latigo on latigo makes a rein that’s soft in your hand, grips well, and holds up to years of hard use. At 5/8 inch wide, they have the weight and feel a good horseman notices the first time he picks them up. They hang right, they won’t twist up on you, and they’ll talk to your horse’s mouth the way good reins should.
Then comes the part I enjoy most: the braided rawhide ball. It’s a small detail, but it adds a little weight up front and that old-time vaquero look that never goes out of style.

1/2″ 6 Strand Mane-Hair Mecate #DK3
$265.00Description: To make this 1/2 inch mecate, six strands of mane-hair are firmly twisted on a horse hair core to 1/2 inch. This mecate, sometimes called a McCarty, is 22 feet long and used on both hackamores and snaffle bits. This 1/2″ 6 Strand Mane-Hair Mecate #DK3 will meet the requirements of even the most discriminating reinsman.
We will be happy to tie this mecate to a bosal if you purchase one but you may need to adjust the number of wraps to fit your horse after you receive it. There are various colors available including sorrels, greys, blacks and whites. Please call 832-529-9226 for color availability. If we don’t hear from you, we will choose the color.
How it works: Horse mane-hair mecates are widely used in the California-vaquero tradition. They are traditionally used on both hackamores and snaffle bits. A horse responds to the feel of the horse hair on their neck better than to many other materials. The traditional material and patterns also look exceptionally good on our horses. This is the ultimate horse hair rope.

1/2″ Latigo on Latigo Reins, Medium Weight #BLL4
$149.00Description: If you’ve got smaller hands and are looking for a double and stitched rein with body and drape but not too much bulk these are a good pick. In your choice of 7 feet or 7 feet 9 inches long, these Medium Weight Latigo on Latigo 1/2 Inch Reins are our best selling double & stitched reins for ladies and youth with small hands. Because they are light, but drape so well when a horse is shown on a really loose rein, these are also a favorite with reiners. We make the 7’9″ length for average size horses. The 7′ length works for those who are training the smaller cutting & cow horse colts and for disciplines like ranch sorting where horses are shown gathered up through continuous quick turns. Choose the length you prefer in the dropdown.
These are made of medium weight leather that’s approximately 18 oz. making the reins 9/32nd of an inch thick after they’re stitched together. These reins are edged by hand, rubbed, oiled and rubbed again. This extra hand work adds to their great feel. Every detail we put in their production coupled with the fact we buy only the highest quality hides to make our reins gives you that good even contact with your horses face you’re looking for.
These reins are built to last.

Crafting: To make double and stitched romals and reins I take 2 pieces of latigo and split them to the correct thicknesses. Next I glue the 2 pieces together and carefully cut the desired lengths. Finally they’re stitched together. Once the leather is stitched the rawhide buttons are braided on the romal and on the reins.
Double and stitched leather is more durable and longer lasting than single ply leather but is not thicker than single ply leather. These romal reins will have that good feel in your hands. All of the rawhide at Dennis Moreland Tack is produced entirely by hand from start to finish before being braided.
Your rawhide should be conditioned regularly with #ZK Vaquero Rawhide Cream.
Shown is Clayton Edsall riding Skeets Oak Peppy to the 2016 World’s Greatest Horseman title in his Leather Romal Reins with Rawhide Buttons. “These romal reins have the weight and feel I think romal reins should have” says Clayton.
