A good spur strap keeps your spurs secure so you can communicate clearly with your horse. Every Dennis Moreland Tack spur strap has a built-in safety feature. A thin leather teardrop covers the inside spur button, so your buttons won’t catch on each other or on your jeans and trip you.
That matters most during groundwork with horses, colts or cattle. It also matters if you’re a calf roper, steer roper or goat tier, or ride in any event where you get off and run.
Straps with button covers can look hard to put on, but it’s a quick job. Watch the video below and follow these steps.
What you’ll need
A small flat screwdriver
Needle nose pliers
Your spurs and straps
Optional: saddle soap or a little warm water to soften the leather around the openings
Before you start: check that each strap is on the correct side. The buckle should face outward. The flat part of the strap should lie against the inside of your foot and run over the top to the buckle.
Step 1: Attach the outside strap (the smaller strap with the buckle)
Spread the opening with the pliers.
Push the edge of the outside button through the hole.
Wedge the screwdriver into the opening, on top of and parallel with the button.
Lever the strap behind the button.
Step 2: Attach the inside strap (the larger strap)
Spread the opening in the back of the strap with the pliers.
Set one edge of the inside button in the opening.
Use the screwdriver to lever the leather on the other side of the opening over the top of the button.
